Using a restricted number of materials and geometric forms, Allsop creates site-specific works that relate to the ‘given‘ architectural space of their environment. He conceives this relationship between work and space through a process of either interrupting, editing, screening or framing the architectural ‘given’ of the space, that which pre-exists the work itself. As such, designing a work in which the architectural context is in a permanent relationship with the work is a logical progression for him.
Repetition, symmetry, geometry and ratio feature in his work as what could be referred to as ‘objective‘ material elements. These form a visual language that nonetheless evokes another immaterial, visual space, that of reality. Within these reflections, a non-objective realm of movement, perception, rhythm, chance and even memory is evoked. What the viewer sees is always created by the viewer. In the movement or relationship between an objective material reality (the work, the architecture) and the reflected image is a result of the perspective of the embodied viewer. As such this image is in constant flux, inseparable from the ‘spatial givens‘ (the accidents of space) but also from our perceptual, subjective memory. Dr. Nickolas Lambrianou
